What WHOIS data tells you about a domain

Every registered domain has a creation date stored in the global WHOIS system — this is Googles oldest confirmed ranking signal. When a domain has been alive for years, it has had time to accumulate natural backlinks, build indexation history, and establish trust signals that search engines factor into authority scores.

Why domain age matters for SEO

Googles patents and confirmed statements identify domain age as one of many freshness signals. The practical impact is modest compared to backlinks and content quality, but older domains often benefit from indirect advantages: crawl budget priority, accumulated linking history, and trust scores built over years of uninterrupted operation.

What this tool checks

  • Registration date — the day the domain was first registered, pulled directly from public RDAP records.
  • Total age — converted to years and months so you can immediately compare domains at a glance.
  • Trust tier — a plain-English verdict from "very new" to "veteran" so you know where a domain sits relative to the full age spectrum.

When a domain shows no age

Some domains use privacy/proxy registration services that hide the creation date from public WHOIS records. Others use the GDPR-mandated redacted WHOIS format that omits the registration date. In either case the domain still has an age — it just is not visible in public records. Google sees the full record through its own data sources regardless of privacy settings.

How to verify a domain age manually

The most reliable check is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) RDAP protocol, which this tool uses. You can also check manually by visiting an RDAP lookup such as rdap.org/domain/example.com for any domain. The field you are looking for is eventDate on the registrationevent.
