<h2>What is featured snippet optimization?</h2>
<p>Featured snippet optimization is the practice of structuring one section of a page so Google pulls it into the position-0 box. You write a clear question as the H2, answer it directly in the first 50–65 words beneath, and use the same words people typed into the search bar.</p>

Scoring is calibrated to Google's published snippet budgets and Ahrefs/Semrush 2024–25 selection studies — paragraph 50–65 words, lists 4–8 parallel items, tables 2–5 rows. The score is a directional check, not a guarantee: position-0 still depends on the page's overall authority and the exact SERP a query returns.

What the snippet score measures

Featured snippets are the answer boxes Google shows above position-1 for question-shaped queries. They are not awarded by an algorithm you can game — they are picked by a snippet selector that picks one block per query, only when the query is shaped as a question and only when a page answers it cleanly. This tool scores your H2 + answer block against the four conditions the selector rewards, calibrated to Google's published budgets and Ahrefs / Semrush 2024–25 selection studies.

How Google picks the snippet

  • Question match. Your H2 must literally contain the question people type — including the question mark. "How do you optimise for featured snippets" beats "Featured snippet optimisation tips" every time.
  • Format fit. Google has three snippet shapes — paragraph, list, table. It picks the one that fits the query. "Best X" questions get lists, "what is X" gets a paragraph, "X vs Y" gets a table.
  • Length budget. Paragraphs run 50–65 words; lists run 4–8 items; tables run 2–5 rows × 2–4 columns. Out of budget means Google will truncate mid-thought — and a truncated snippet gets beaten by the page that landed in the box.
  • Position-of-answer. The answer must be the first 50 words after the H2. No preamble, no "let me explain" — the snippet selector wants the answer in the first sentence.

What the score deliberately doesn't measure

Snippet selection still depends on the page's overall authority, the SERP the query returns, and Google's confidence in the source. A perfectly-shaped block on page 4 won't beat a sloppy block on a page the algorithm already trusts. The score is a writing check, not a ranking guarantee — for the authority half, build internal links and earn the position first.

Pair the snippet block with FAQPage schema

Pages that ship FAQPage JSON-LD containing the same Q&A pair as the H2 roughly double their snippet-selection rate — Google gets to confirm the answer via structured data instead of inferring it from prose. TheSchema Markup Generator ships a FAQPage template that renders the same shape Google wants.
