What this tool checks
The heading hierarchy audit runs five checks on any HTML document or live URL:
- Single H1 — exactly one
<h1>per page is the HTML spec requirement and what Google expects. Multiple H1s dilute the topic signal. - Heading sequence — levels should step down consecutively (H1 → H2 → H3). Skipping H2 and jumping to H3 breaks the document outline that screen readers build.
- Section headings — at least two H2+ headings make a page scannable. Single-heading pages are hard to navigate.
- Empty headings —
<h2></h2>passes the validator but tells screen readers nothing. Every heading needs text. - Duplicate heading text — same-level headings with identical text confuse both users and crawlers. Each should be unique.
All analysis runs entirely in your browser. No HTML or URL is ever sent to a server.
