How link value is scored

Every outbound link on a page passes a portion of that page's ranking authority to the target. Not all links are equal — the scoring above weighs four signals to estimate how much link equity each link is likely to pass:

  • Follow vs. nofollow — Google treats nofollowed links as a hint to ignore them for ranking. A followed link in body content passes significantly more equity than a nofollow anywhere on the page.
  • Position on the page — Links in the main body pass more authority than links in navigation, sidebar widgets, or footer sections.
  • Anchor text quality — Descriptive, keyword-relevant anchor text adds context signals. Generic anchors like "click here" or "read more" pass less value.
  • Domain age — Older, established domains generally pass more trust and authority than brand-new sites. Domain age is looked up via public WHOIS/RDAP records.

What this tool does not measure

This tool scores links from the perspective of the sending page. It cannot see PageRank, Domain Authority, or the actual ranking impact on the target — those require commercial API data from Moz, Ahrefs, or Semrush. It is useful for auditing your own pages to identify low-value outbound links you could remove, or to understand why a competitor's page outranks yours despite similar metrics.

How to improve link equity distribution on your pages

  • Audit pages with many outbound links — consider whether all links still point to relevant, live resources.
  • Use nofollow on affiliate links, sponsored content, and user-generated content (required by Google's guidelines).
  • Place your most important editorial links in body content rather than sidebars or footers.
  • Keep anchor text descriptive and varied — avoid over-optimised exact-match anchor text.
